Player Value Posts
To avoid spamming the general blog page with the Player Value posts for each season/team, this blog page will serve as a separate listing of all of the Player Value posts for each season/team. These posts will be less detailed, mainly just listing out the top players each season and including the necessary files.
In this post I will list out the All-Time Pittsburgh Pirates lineup, according to Player Value. I will follow along the same format as MLB uses with its new "All-MLB" teams, which you can view here. That format is 1 player for each defensive position, 5 starters, and 2 relievers. I will only use DHs for AL teams, since most NL teams don't have enough seasons with the DH to really have a deserving player. Importantly, and as the graphic above suggests, these are based on individual seasons according to Player Value. The question we want to ask here is which version of a player would we want on our team? I want to give guys that only played a few seasons with a team an equal chance at making the lineup as the guys that spent their entire careers with one team. If you had to give this NL team a DH spot, you would probably move Ralph Kiner to DH and put 1992 Barry Bonds in at LF. Kiner in 1951 has the 3rd highest Batting Value in Pirates history since 1912, at 64.25. Ahead of him is actually the 1949 version of Kiner with 66.03 Batting Value, so we'd probably want to do that swap if Kiner is solely being a DH. Bonds that season has the 2nd highest Player Value to not be in the starting lineup, at 64.91. Ahead of him are the 1938-1940 versions of SS Arky Vaughan, but I think Kiner at DH makes more sense than Honus Wagner. Vaughan in 1935 also had the highest Batting Value in Pirates history, but that is mainly due to his relative offensive greatness over his SS peers. In an absolute sense, Kiner in 1949 or 1951 was certainly superior offensively than Vaughan in 1935, so he makes the most sense for the DH spot. Let's take a deeper look at our all-time team, as well as some honorable mentions and the best seasons from other noteworthy Pirates players: All-Time Pittsburgh Pirates Lineup C - Jason Kendall (1998)

Thanks for checking out this All-Time Pirates post. I think the lineup turned out pretty good, but I would definitely make some changes in building my personal lineup.
I'd love to see Bonds get in there, so I like the idea of having Kiner as the DH and putting '92 Bonds in LF. I would probably replace Reynolds in CF with 2012 McCutchen, and I'd prefer 1972 Stargell at 1B over Fletcher. The Pirates were a little trickier than the Reds and the All-Time team's value fares a little worse than the Reds because of the high positional concentrations. While the Reds have more all-time greats spread across positions, the Pirates all-time greats tended to play the same position. At LF you have both Bonds and Stargell blocked by the stellar peak of Kiner, and in RF you have both Clemente and Parker blocked by Hall of Famer Pop Waner. Even ignoring Bryan Reynolds, CF is conflicted with the peak of McCuthcen and Hall of Famers Lloyd Waner and Max Carey. Hall of Famer Kiki Cuyler also gets lost in the outfield jumble. Some great SS seasons from Hall of Famers Arky Vaughan and Rabbit Maranville get blocked by the great Honus Wagner. While 2B and 3B are held down by Hall of Famers in Mazeroski and Traynor, it would be beneficial if the greatness from other positions had seeped into those more. This is especially true for the Pirate catchers and first basemen as well. I will also note that even though Wagner takes the SS spot from his 1912 season, this is only because I have Player Value from 1912-2021. Wagner's best season was certainly before 1912, as he played from 1897-1917.
